To be chosen as a godparent is a special honor. You, above all others, have been entrusted with the responsibility to participate in the child’s Catholic Christian life and education.
To be a godparent you must be over 16 years of age. You must also be a practicing Catholic in good standing which means you go to Mass regularly and you are able to receive the Holy Eucharist. You must also attend a Baptism Preparation Class in advance of the Baptism however not more than a year, twelve months, prior.
This privilege offers you the opportunity to develop an enriching spiritual relationship with the child, one which could last a lifetime.
Be supportive of your godchild’s parents in their role as primary religious educators of their child.
Be a model of Catholic Christian living for your godchild through daily prayer, virtue and active participation in parish life and liturgy.
As your godchild grows, listen to and share in the struggles and triumphs of living a Catholic Christian life.
Celebrate the anniversary of their Baptism with a visit, a card or a note.
Help them to remember the holy days from the Catholic viewpoint with the appropriate teachings which is more than the ‘retail’ events they have become.
Congratulations! May God lead and bless you in your duties.
